Betty M. Lawson

Betty McCoy Lawson passed away at her home Tuesday, April 16, 2013.

Betty was born July 11, 1927, in Arnolds Park, Iowa, to Charles and Marie McCoy. She spent her youth in Osceola, Iowa, and moved to Des Moines in 1943. She retired from Northwestern Bell in 1989. Following her retirement, she tutored at Willard Elementary School. Betty was a member of Grant Park Christian Church, Telephone Pioneers, and Communication Workers of America Local Union 7102. She was an avid reader and conservationist. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, trivia, and Scrabble games. She had a love for Ireland and all things Irish. She valued and treasured many friendships. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her granddaughters.

Betty is survived by her children, Susan Griffiths and Tom Lawson; granddaughters, Amy (Dan) Berman, Shannon Griffiths, and Allie Griffiths; brother-in-law, William C. Walling; sister-in-law, Arlene McCoy; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jake Lawson; and her siblings, Ronnie Davis, Billie Walling, Earlyn Heacock, and Robert McCoy.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 19, 2013, at Plymouth Congregational Church, 4126 Ingersoll Avenue, followed by burial at Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.
