Omer Thompson, 82, passed away at 12:27 p.m., Monday, April 8, 2013, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Omer was born July 20, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, to Omer L. and Helen (Krantz) Thompson. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard destroyers USS DeHaven and Mansfield during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by Meredith Corp. for 40 years, and retired from R.R. Donnelley in 1991. Omer was a member of The DeHaven Sailors Association and Graphic Communication Workers Union. After retiring he enjoyed sharing his passion for dinosaurs, fossils, and animals with elementary children for years.

Omer was a loving husband, father, and most of all a grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Aileen; children, Omer L. “Tom” (Barbara) Thompson III, Cynthia (Steve) Mayo, Teresa Swan, and Sandra Ryan; grandchildren, Amber (Gavin), Cliff, Amanda (Alex), Rose, Lauren, Ariana, Joshua, Megan, Sean, and Claire; sister, Dorothy (Ron) Thompson; many cousins; and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Julia Ann.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.
