Service Details
Charles E. (Ed) Coy, Sr, 80, died on April 1, 2013. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 5 2013, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, located at 121 NW 60th Avenue. Visitation begins at 11:00 am, with the funeral service to start at noon.
Ed was born in Kellerton, IA, on August 8, 1932, but lived most of his life in Des Moines. He proudly served as a Marine in the Korean War, and upon his return home he married the love of his life, Mary Becker. Their everlasting love has endured, having just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on February 27, 2013.
Ed had worked for over 40 years at Iowa Power, but truly loved retirement where he pursued his many hobbies which included fishing, woodworking, gardening, and best of all - spoiling all of his grandkids.
He is survived by his wife Mary, sons Michael (Vicki), Chuck (Sonya), and Ken (Jane); grandkids Lucas (Erica & great-grandson, Kyler), Logan, Emily, Betsy, Meghan, and Katie.

The following excerpt is taken from the draft that my Dad had written for their 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration back in 2003, which I've edited to help bring it up to date as follows:
Dear Friends,
We spent a lot of time with our three Coyboys over the years. We went fishing every summer and hunting in the fall down around Creston, IA where both sets of grandparents lived. I always planted a huge garden in the summer, which of course, had to be cleaned out before we could go fishing. The Boys always loved doing that!
Dennis Underwood (who passed away in 2010) was a lifelong friend of mine whom I had known since we were 10 years old. We proudly served in the Korean War together and were wounded on the very same day. Over the years we had been through a lot together. Semper Fi! (always faithful)
During my 40+ years of working at Iowa Power and Light I had a friend, Al Fenton, who had been my truck driver groundman. He always called me "the Old Man" that didn't like changes or new ways of doing things. I guess I'm still pretty much like that ...
When I had my stroke back in 2000 I had 6 very special friends, Chuck & Jeanne Alfman, Dennis & Martha Underwood (all 4 are now deceased) and Gene and Margaret Hawkins, who all stood by us during my recovery. A very special thank you goes out to Gene Hawkins who spent more time at my house than at his own, while patiently helping me to relearn to do all of those everyday tasks that this stroke had taken from me. My thanks goes out to all.
I must also thank Pat Young for introducing me to my future wife Mary Frances Becker. Over the years I've always told Mary to "Stick with me and you'll be sittin' in tall cotton!"
I think we raised 3 great sons who are wonderful to both their Mother and I and have always been there for us whenever we needed them. While growing up I'm sure that the boys thought that I had made them work too hard and was too strict with them, but I feel that their Mom and I must have done something right as all 3 are raising beautiful families of their own. You have made our lives a much richer one ... and I love you all very much.
When hearing of the death of my Dad, a friend of mine shared that "The worst thing is never the last thing." Death is a "comma" not a "period." It is said that the definition of a true conservationist is when an 80 year old man orders young, new fruit trees to plant ... and my two brothers are doing just that for my Dad this week. I truly believe that my Dad's spirit lives on in each of us.
In closing, my Dad was a very proud man who believed that hard work brought its own just rewards, and no finer man could be found to be your provider, your friend, your protector and best of all ... your DAD.
We love you Dad.

My Grandfather passed away at 10pm this evening (4/1). He was one hell of a man. A man from a generation almost forgotten ... a Korean War Veteran, received 2 purple Hearts ... A great Grandfather to me, and will be forever missed ...

My grandpa was a fantastic story teller and a great teacher who could be quite "eloquent" with his words as he taught Logan and I how to fish and then how to curse while doing it, especially if the fish weren't biting or if he'd just missed another bite! He was a funny guy with a very dry sense of humor, and as he might say "his humor was drier than the sawdust that he kept his nightcrawlers in!" He was a little quirky too. For example he liked to keep track of how many squirrels he had caught in his traps and then transported to the river for "relocation!" In his later years he really loved watching college basketball and the weather channel on TV, so I guess that it was fitting, I suppose, that his favorite team was the Iowa State Cyclones ... We love him and will miss him, he was a tough old man who left us all with a lasting legacy.

Eddie had many hobbies over the years that included woodworking, fishing, coon hunting and was known for his fabulous gardens! He was always looking forward to planting his next garden every spring and loved ordering fruit trees and garden seeds out of the numerous seed catalogs that he kept within close reach to his recliner! He was a great man and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. We know that he's in heaven now and no longer suffering! We Love you Popsi! God bless you!
