Drucilla Straub

Drucilla Mae Straub,82, of Des Moines passed away Saturday, 7/7/07 at Wesley Acres Care Center. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Wakonda Christian Church. Burial will be in Dallas Cemetery in Melcher, Iowa. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Wakonda Christian Church
Mrs. Dru Straub was born in Des Moines on March 14, 1925, to Thomas and Agnes Frye. When she was three years old they moved to Melcher, Iowa where she graduated from Melcher High School. She continued her schooling at the University of Northern Iowa and received a 2 year certificate to teach kindergarten. Dru went on to teach at Lake Mills for 3 years and then Fort Dodge, Iowa. After several years teaching, Dru came to Des Moines to work for the Des Moines School System where her first position was at Hubbell Elementary School.
While teaching she continued her education in the evenings and week-ends. She graduated from Drake University receiving a BA degree in 1955. She continued her training at Drake ultimately receiving a Master of Science in Education. The also accumulated 40 hours of education beyond her master’s degree. Dru’s teaching carrier spanned 56 years retiring from Jefferson Elementary School. In retirement she continued working for Weight Watchers as a part time employee.
Dru loved volunteering at Iowa Methodist Hospital on Sunday afternoon on the ICCU and CCU floors. She was also a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa honorary teacher’s sorority of Iowa and as well as the sorority’s international affiliate. She was a member of the Wakonda Christian Church, Acanthus Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Nile fraternal lodges.
She is survived by her daughter, Sarah C. Straub of Stevens Point, Wisconsin. A brother, Archie Frye of East Moline, Illinois and a nephew, Tom Frye of Flanagar, Illinois
