Lillian “Jean” Gorman, 87, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at her home in Pleasant Hill.

Jean was born January 7, 1926, in Waukee, Iowa, to Cathrine Mae (Keyes) and Samuel Wesley Garrington. She was a life-long resident of the Des Moines area. Jean graduated from East High School. She served as Editor for her high school newspaper, “The Scroll,” and was an attendant to the Senior Prom Queen.

Jean married John “Jack” Gorman, Jr. She worked for Hawkins Greenhouse, the City Clerk’s Office, and the Mayor’s Office. She retired in 1965.

Jean was a member of Centennial Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Eastern Star, and the East Des Moines Women’s Club. She loved animals, especially Bubs, her cat.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Julie Kay Palmer and husband, Larry of Runnells, Iowa; five granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; nieces, Joann, Ramona, and Marla and their families; very special friends, Diane and her family and Bud and his son, Lane; along with many other friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Mae Garrington; husband, Jack; two sisters, Rachel and Maxine “Toots”; and brother, Lawrence.

Services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, March 29, 2013, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines, with visitation for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League in loving memory of Jean.

Jean wanted to extend her thanks to her wonderful physicians, Dr. Elliott, Dr. Nutt, Dr. Maxwell, and Dr. Amspaugh for their compassion and care.
