Monika Lucija Kozulins passed away Friday, March 15, 2013, at Trinity Center at Luther Park.

Monika was born May 8, 1913, in the Community of Rubene, Ilukste, Latvia, to Jazeps and Helena Raubiskis. She came to the United States as a refugee from communism on November 29, 1950, and became a U.S. Citizen on May 1, 1956. Monika retired from Des Moines General Hospital after 30 years of service as a Registered Nurse. She was a member of Our Lady of the Americas Catholic Church, The Latvian Society in Iowa, where she sang in the choir, and a lifetime member of the American Latvian Association. Monika was an excellent seamstress, and was famous for her torte and other pastries. She also loved to garden and had a soft heart for animals, especially cats.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Juris Kozulins; four brothers; and one sister. Monika is survived by her extended family in Latvia and her beloved friends and neighbors.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, March 22, 2013, at Our Lady of the Americas, 1271 E. 9th Street, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service Friday, at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to her church parish in Dunava, Latvia.
