Joffer Yamen, 85, died Thursday, July 5, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.
Joffer was born November 3, 1921 to Edward and Hadly Yamen in Woodburn, Iowa. Joffer grew up in Des Moines and attended East High School receiving an honorary diploma in 2004 that he was very proud of. He was a Navy veteran of WWII, serving both in the North Atlantic and the South Pacific. Joffer worked in construction as an ironworker for Neumann Bros. until retiring in 1983. He then operated Yamen’s Used Cars from 1989 to 1999 in Reasnor, Iowa. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, gardening and playing cribbage.
Joffer is survived by two daughters, Kathy (Bill) Greif and Vicky (Phil) Ebert, both of Des Moines; two sons, Mike (Melanee) Yamen of Des Moines and Joe (Tiffan) Yamen of Waukee; a sister, Barbara Scott of Texas; ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his parents; three brothers; a sister; a granddaughter and a great granddaughter.
Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
