Eugene Freeman, 85, of Des Moines and formerly of Los Angeles, California, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines.
Better known as Gene, he was born August 27, 1927, in Des Moines, to Orzola Dudley and Lawyer Freeman. He attended East High School prior to joining the U.S. Army, a veteran of WWII, honorably discharged in 1947.
Gene leaves to cherish his memory his only son, Chuck Freeman (Diane); his grandsons, Brenton, Ethan, and Conner Freeman; and a multitude of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William; and his sister, Mamie Underwood.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at Maple Street Baptist Church, 1552 Maple Street in Des Moines, followed by burial at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. The family will greet friends one hour prior to his celebration of life Tuesday at the church.
He will be remembered as a wonderful father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to all those who knew him.
The family would like to give special thanks to the caring and compassionate doctors, nurses, and staff at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines.
