Lois Smith

Lois E. Smith, 87, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at Millpond Community in Ankeny.

Lois was born July 27, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois to Leonard and Helen Wiese. She graduated from high school in 1943 and earned her degree in Music Education from Morningside College. Lois was a teacher in the West Des Moines School District for over 30 years where she founded the string program that led to hundreds of students embracing the violin before retiring in 1976. She played violin for the community and for the Des Moines Symphony. She loved world wide travel, scrap booking with her family photos and spending time with her grandchildren. Throughout her life she exemplified the true meaning of a Christian.

She is survived by her children, Gregory (Cheri) Smith, Valerie (Mark) Wyatt, Allison (Robert) Crawford and Bradley (Kristi) Smith; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Phyllis (Douglas) Adam. Lois was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, William Francis Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St., Des Moines followed by burial at Timber Creek Cemetery in Marshalltown. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
