Vernon D. Nelson, 78, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.
Vernon was born May 23, 1934, in Boone, Iowa, to Russell and Velma Nelson. He was very hard working and never knew a stranger. Vernon owned and operated Climate Control Systems, Inc., for 34 years. He enjoyed fishing and camping and was an incredibly proud grandpa.
He is survived by his daughter, Deb Nelson; son, Rick (Kathleen) Nelson; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Inez Sesker; companion, Marie Spittler; and a host of other extended relatives and friends. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Patricia; and his brother, Virgil.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.

Marie, Deb and Alivia, you all have my sympathies, thoughts and prayers. I am so sorry to read of Vern's passing but am very thankful he is in a better place. My love to each of you and the rest of the family.

Rick, I'm sorry to hear about your Dad. I remember working on your race car in his garage. That has to be around 40 years ago. I remember your dad as being a quiet and a very nice guy. I know he will be missed but the memories will last forever

My thoughts are with you and your families. Vern was a hard worker and great business person to deal with over the years. I always enjoyed talking and working with Vern. He will be missed, but we will always have the wonderful memories to cherish. May Peace be with you.
I really enjoyed talking with him last summer at the doctors office.

Vern was a good man. I remember hanging out with Deb at their house in high school and he was fun to be around. He took us out to nice restaurants showing us a great time. In addition he installed new furnaces in my home and two of my parents homes. Vern was our favorite HVAC guy! I now work for Des Moines Heating and Cooling and understand what his job profession entailed. He will be missed. God Bless...Rest in peace.
