Melvin R. "Mel" Kellis

Melvin Raymond “Mel” Kellis, 69, died Thursday, February 28, 2013, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. A Celebration Visitation of Mel’s Life will be held 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.

Mel was born May 26, 1943, in Des Moines, to Melvin and Dorothy Kellis. He proudly served his country as a US Marine. Mel was employed as a truck driver for Yellow Freight and was a member of Local #147. He was an avid state fair goer and had award-winning antique entries at the Pioneer Hall. Mel enjoyed flowers, gardening, and figure eight races. Mostly he loved spending time with his family, especially his beloved granddaughter, Haydyn, who held his heart.

Mel is survived by his wife, Karla; sisters, Dorothy (Richard) Porter, Linda (Jim) Ford, Sandy (Tim) Duff; step-mother, Billie Kellis, step-sons, Steve (Erin) Seals, Jake Seals; step-daughter, Kassie Seals; granddaughter, Haydyn Seals, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Jamie Kellis, and step-son, Arron Seals.
