Mary Johnson, 58, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born December 29, 1954, in Alta, Iowa, to Cyril and Bettie Kjolhede.
Mary worked for Principal Financial for more than 35 years as a Sr. Business Coordinator. Mary was a dance mom and animal lover. She enjoyed reading, cooking, playing games, being outdoors, gardening, planning family vacations, and spending time with her family, especially Caleb.
Mary is survived by her husband, Bryon; children, Alex Johnson (Todd) and Rachel Colburn (Jave); grandson, Caleb Colburn; and siblings, David and Julie. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, March 1, 2013, at Ankeny First United Methodist Church, 206 SW Walnut Street in Ankeny. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines. A private burial will be held at a later date at Ankeny Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

I am so sorry to learn of Mary Jane's passing. She will always be Mary Jane to those of us who went to elementary, junior high, and high school with her. I think of her singing, playing flute in band, and many other memories, most of which involve laughing. I don't know if she continued to be interested in them, but I think of her each Academy Awards ceremony. And I will continue to do so. Sending my deepest sympathy to Bryon and all of Mary's family.

Bryan and family - I was so saddened to read of Mary's passing into Life Eternal. She was certainly a mentor to me as she was one of my former leaders and co-workers. I can still remember the baby shower she hosted for me when I had our 'surprise' twins - almost 32 years ago!
Mary always had a smile, a 'can do' approach to everything and absolutely loved her family. She will certainly be missed by all.

While I never had the chance to meet Mary in person, she was always a pleasure to work with. She always had the answers to my questions and I couldn't wait to work on another project with her. My thoughts and prayers go out to her entire family.

So sorry to hear of Mary's passing. I attended school with Mary Jane from the very beginning, starting at Fairview elementary north of Alta. She was a great addition to the class of '73 and will always be remembered for her smile. She always said "someday I will be a star", and by all the comments she truely is.

I am deeply saddened to learn about Mary's passing. Mary was a beautiful lady inside and out. She was very dedicated and devoted to her family and her job at Principal. I will cherish the memories I have of working for her. My deepest sympathy to Mary's family, friends, and coworkers for your loss. I know you will miss Mary very much, but her spirit lives on.

I attended Alta High School with Mary and Bryon and always think of theirs as a great love story. Truly, Mary was a loving and generous person--obvious to all even in high school. I am deeply saddened to learn of her death even as we know she rests in God's loving, eternal care. My deepest condolences to you, Bryon and family--such a great loss of one so dear.

Mary was such a lovey person! She never knew a stranger and was such a wam and caring person. I enjoyed our dance mom time together and have very fond memories of all the recitals and competitions shared with Mary. My sympathies to the family for their loss of such a wonderful person.

So sorry to hear about Mary's passing. Will always remember her laugh & smile from our school days. Mary was always willing to help out with class activities. I know everyone in the Alta High School Class of 1973 will have fond memories of Mary~she will be missed. God Bless Mary & her family.
