Daniel J. Mahedy, 77, died Monday, February 11, 2013, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. He was born February 8, 1936, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Francis and Eva Mahedy.
Danny proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the Army National Guard for 30 years, and spent 2 years as a paratrooper. He belonged to Knights of Columbus. After his retirement, he worked for the Des Moines Public Schools. Danny loved playing cards, camping, spending time with his family, and wintering in Texas.
Danny is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, JoAnn; children, Laura (Tony) Castelline, Karen (Troy) Shafer, and Connie (Eddie) Rice; 16 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brothers, Bill (Mary) Mahedy, Dave (Deana) Mahedy, and Mike Mahedy; sisters, Margaret (Russ) Nelson, Marilyn (Stewart) Aldrich, and Sharon Rodish; and many extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jeff; and three brothers, Frank, Ed and Jack Mahedy.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 14, 2013, at All Saints Catholic Church, 650 NE 52nd Avenue, Des Moines, with burial at Pine Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit with family from 6 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. vigil, Wednesday, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, in Des Moines.
In loving memory of Danny, memorial contributions given to the family will be designated to programs helping those less fortunate.

Aunt JoAnn, Laura, Karen, Connie and families - My heart goes out to you all! Uncle Danny was kind, generous and truly a good man. He could always make us laugh! He was very loved and will be missed by all who knew him!

Danny was a great friend and mentor of mine. I was one of his Soldiers in the National Guard and worked for him for several years until his retirement. I will miss him and want the family to know we will be praying for him. From Afganistan,
