Louise S. "Sophie" Frew
January 16, 2013
Louise Sophie (Sikorski) Frew, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed from this life on January 17, 2013. Sophie loved life, and lived it to the fullest with her warm and compassionate nature. At the age of 90, she could outthink, outwit, and outlast those of lesser years. Her greatest prides in life were her children; her greatest joy, her grandchildren. Among her greatest pleasures were studying and writing about religion.
You may not be aware, but you’ve probably met Sophie. She was the stranger who offered a warm smile when everyone else passed you by; she was the one who spoke a kind word or two when you looked to be alone and in need of a friend. She was a beautiful, strong, and independent woman who exemplified the teachings of brotherly love.
Born on April 17, 1922, Sophie spent her childhood in Sioux City, Iowa, and her adulthood in Roberts, Idaho, and Des Moines. While serving with the Navy Waves in World War II, she met and married the love of her life, Donald Frew. During 52 years together, they reared seven children: Bobbie Frew of Des Moines, Stan (Mary Ann) Frew of Des Moines, Donald Frew of Minburn, E.J. (Russ) Boos of Altoona, Andi Davenport of Runnells, John (Marcia) Frew of Denver, CO, and Susie (Tim) Pinckney of Adel. In addition to caring for home and family, Sophie worked at Western International for many years before retirement.
In addition to her children, Sophie is survived by 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, three sisters, and two brothers.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In accordance with her wishes to continue helping others, Sophie donated her body to science. Cremation and interment will follow at a later date at a private family service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Food Bank of Iowa.

So sorry for the loss of your Mom. I will always remember her for the funny things she was always doing. I worked with her at Western International and she dressed in crazy hats and such for every holiday. Wonderful lady.

Sorry for the loss of your Mother, John. I lost my Mom last year at 95, she lived actively up till the end, as did your Mom, it appears. I'm sure your Mom was a very happy and content lady!

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this very sad time. Although I know that words are small comfort at these difficult moments, I also know you will often find great comfort in memories of your Mom. I think of her now and remember how giving and welcoming she was to all of your friends in the house on 10th, on top of working so hard and taking care of at least half of you. She was truly one of the kindest and most generous people I have ever had the pleasure to know. She welcomed me into your home and made me feel like a valued member of the crew. You couldn't see her without her trying to feed you or give you some small treat or pleasure. She always tried to cheer you up with jokes, stories or whatever she could come up with. Even in these later years, she still had her Joie de vivre... ( wish I knew how to say that in Polish).
You have all been truly blessed to have had such a strong, caring, loving Mom in your life. I feel truly fortunate to have had her in mine and thank all of you for sharing her. She was really a treasure. Sophie, rest in peace, knowing that you are so loved and will be truly missed by many. Love, Kathy
