As many of us often do, we poke around the internet in our spare time, often looking for glimpses of our past. I just now happened to be reminiscing about my youth and being a new (and very nervous) member of Justo Hijo and the IBM. I was all of 16 years old when I joined. This made me immediately remember Mel, so i search for his name - and unfortunately see that he passed away several years ago. I remember Mel very well as a kind and gracious man who was friendly to an awkward kid who loved magic. Through Justo Jijo and with Mel's help I got over being awkward and shy. Mel ended up being my "sponsor" to join Justo Hijo and the IBM. He was my strongest supporter as I performed my "audition" routine for membership. He helped make great memories. Another strong memory I have was when Harry Blackstone, Jr. performed at the performing arts center in Des Moines and a group of us, led by Mel, went and met Blackstone afterward. I'm now 52 - and afraid I don't do much magic anymore. Except to teach my kids a trick or two every now and then. I still have all my old magic gear - it is just so full of fond memories I can't throw it out. Anyway - I just thought I would share some thoughts. My deepest condolences. Please know that Mel had an impact on this world - I am proof of that.

Please accept my deepest sympathy for I too know the pain of losing someone as important as a father. May your family find comfort as I have in knowing that our loving heavenly Father promises us that very soon he will 'wipe out every tear from our eyes, and death will be no more.' (Revelation 21:4) What a wonderful day that will be!

Uncle Melvin showed me how to split my thumb in two and put it back together! More than that, he taught me that reality is more than what I see and hear. That delighted me at the time and hints now that this disappearance is not final. God bless you, Uncle Melvin, and thank you for sharing your good heart with us.

When God passed out "Daddies" he passed me, (and those brothers - Lol) out the best! He and Mom are more magical than all of you probably know.

I had forgotten about all the tricks he had up his sleeve. He and your mother were wonderful people who obviously raised great kids. Maybe gone but not forgotten.

Wow! What joy and smiles Uncle Melvin and Aunt Maureen spread throughout our world. As I tell others after pulling a quarter from their ear (thanks for the lesson Uncle Mel), the magic is in their smiles! I can do nothing but smile myself when thinking of my favorite magician!

So you all know: If there ever was a role model for a husband, a father, and a man, that was Dad. He was truly an exceptional guy. And I am one lucky son.

Our condolences to all of Mel & Maureen's beautiful family. Uncle Mel may have taken some of his secrets with him, but his love for his family -- neither a secret nor an illusion -- remains. We will all miss the Great Magician.
