Service Details

Allen Rice, 64, was born April 14, 1948, in Ottumwa, Iowa to Glenys and Eddyth Thomson Rice and died January 2, 2013, from complications of bile duct cancer. A lifelong Iowan, Allen grew up on a farm near Hedrick, IA. He attended Pekin High School and Iowa State University where he met his wife, Christine Weber, whom he married in 1971. Allen graduated with an M.S. in Economics in 1972. He settled on the financial leasing business and worked in that industry for over 30 years.

While work was important, family was a priority. Allen rarely missed attending his children’s school or extracurricular activities or sharing dinner with his family. At home, he played Mario Kart with his kids, worked on puzzles, and played kids-versus-parents Trivial Pursuit. He also enjoyed baseball and biking; he rode all of RAGBRAI several times. Allen cared deeply for not only his immediate and extended family, but also for his work and church families. His faith journey, which began in his youth, continued all the days of his life. He was truly a glass-half-full kind of guy; he believed that if he was honest and worked hard, everything would work out.

He is survived by his loving wife, Christine; his children, Dr. Alanna Rice of Albuquerque, NM, Allison Rice of Washington, DC, Alex Rice of Benin, Africa, Clint (Alyssa Wassink) Rice of Iowa City, IA; his sisters, Lois Ann Martin and Glenda Sieren; his aunt, Eathol (Vic) Marska and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Lynn Rice.
