Mauro De Freitas Valadão

Mauro De Freitas Valadão (Contra Mestre Xará), 32, was born December 8, 1980, in Unai, Minas Gerais, Brazil, the son of Ivanilde Freitas Valadão and Manoel Vieira Valadão. A beloved Mestre in the Capoeira community, his skill, artistry, and passion inspired students and friends around the world. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side, Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

In addition to his parents, Mauro is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Schleuger Valadão; his daughters, Bianca and Isabel Schleuger Valadão; his siblings, Marcelo, Marcio, Adriana, and Marcos De Freitas Valadão; two nieces; one nephew; his parents-in-law, Mark and Peggy Schleuger; his brother in law, Ryan Schleuger, other loving relatives; and many special friends.

Cremation has occurred, and a celebration of his life will be held Friday, January 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at First Unitarian Church of Des Moines, 1800 Bell Avenue, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the family, directed to The Des Moines Police Officers Credit Union for The Valadão Family.

We will continue to light up the darkness for Mauro, for each other, and for LOVE with a potluck and informal gathering at the PARC Building located at 5374 NE 12th Ave. Pleasant Hill, IA, beginning around 12pm on Saturday, January 12th.
