Rasma Sifers, 99, died at her daughter’s home in Winnetka, Illinois, December 19, 2012.

A retired sewing-machine operator, Rasma was born in Latvia on February 21, 1913. During World War II she escaped to Germany to a Displaced Persons Camp with her husband and two infant children. In 1949, she and her family immigrated to the United States.

Rasma was a member of the Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church in Des Moines and of the Latvian Society in Iowa. She enjoyed music, reading, and gardening.

Rasma was preceded in death by her husband Kristaps; a sister; and her son-in-law. She is survived by her daughters, Baiba Kuntz of Winnetka, Illinois and Ieva Sifers of Des Moines; a brother-in-law; a niece and a nephew; as well as other surviving relatives in Latvia.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2012 with a service at 11 a.m. at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Burial will follow at Oralabor Cemetery in Ankeny.
