J. Marie Cook (nee Harbert), 94, passed away peacefully at The Village in Indianola December 14, 2012. Born at home on a farm in Norwalk, IA, in 1918, she attended the Clover Hills one-room school through 6th grade, and then attended Lincoln High School, graduating in 1935.

She was a mother, sister, and a friend to many. A wonderful seamstress and quilter, she loved her sewing machine and the peace it gave her. A member of First Baptist Church of Johnston, IA, she was active in the Homebuilders Class and Martha’s Circle. She was a former Worthy Matron with The Order of the Eastern Star of Norwalk, IA, and active until lack of mobility prevented her from participation.

She married Eugene Cook in 1937, and celebrated 68 years of marriage before his passing in 2005. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Cecil Harbert; husband, Eugene; brother, Donald; and two sons, Dwight and Dale. Survived by one son, Larry; two daughters-in-law, Jean and Ruth Ann; and two granddaughters, Melissa and Emily; her sister-in-law, Louise Harbert; and many nieces and nephews.

Family will greet friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at Hamilton’s Southtown, 5400 SW 9th Street. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at the Scotch Ridge Cemetery in rural Des Moines. A Celebration Of Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at The Village, 1203 North E Street in Indianola.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Good Shepherd Fund at The Village in Indianola, IA, or the Order of the Eastern Star Lodge (also Norwalk), or First Baptist Church in Johnston, IA.
