Ernest J. Bowenkamp

Ernest “Big Bama” Bowenkamp, 79, passed away Thursday, December 6, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.
Ernest was born October 6, 1933, in Elmo, Missouri, to Ernest and Frances Bowenkamp, and graduated from the University of Missouri. He was working for LOOK Magazine when he met and married Lorrie Virnig. Ernest retired from CDS in the 90’s. He was a true “people person,” and enjoyed working in his yard. Ernest was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
Ernest is survived by his daughter, Laura (Matt) Kelly; grandchildren, Walker, Cyote, and Cassidy; sister, Anita Vogel; sisters-in-law, Jan Auer and Angie Stelter; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorrie Bowenkamp.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, December 9, 2012, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony’s Altar & Rosary Society or Bishop Drumm.

To the family,
Ernie was a great guy who left a lot of great memories with those who knew him. Working with him at CDS was always a pleasure. He was business when he needed to be and just plain fun the rest of the time. He will be missed greatly.

Ernie was a big guy because God said,"this guy needs the space for all of the good he has in him. His warmth and humor needed room to thrive." and smart as a wipe!!! We looked up to Ernie..well, he had to...but in so many ways. Ernie, not only at CDS but pourin us drinks at LPHouse, here's to you!! You will always be in our hearts!!! To your family, you are in many hearts of all of his friends.

Laura - just having gone through this myself a couple months ago, I understand your loss. You will also have additional hard days ahead - birthdays, holidays, etc.. While these are painful remembrances of your loss, use those times to think of all the laughter & good times you shared together. I did not know your father - but he must have been a great man to raise such an awesome daughter!
