Jesus “Jesse” Lopez Gutierrez

Jesse Lopez, 93, died of natural causes on Wednesday, December 5, 2012, at Altoona Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Son of Jesus and Hermalinda Lopez, Jesse was born August 8, 1919, in Colima, Mexico, where he served in the Mexican Navy. Jesse first came to the U.S. as a Bracero field worker in the 40’s, then went on to work a number of jobs and became a United States citizen in the 60’s. His wife, Margaret Rose Lopez, is who brought him to Des Moines, where he worked for Pittsburg Des Moines Steel and raised his family.

Jesse is survived by his sister, Maria; his children, grandchildren and step-son, Gilbert and Connie of Tampa, FL (Gilbert Jr., Anthony, and Annette), Jesse and Linda of Des Moines, (Gina, Reanna, Angela, and Jesse, III), Larry, (deceased), (Lawrence, Pat, and Andrew), Hilda and Tom Tompkins of Woodbury, MN, (Melanie, Tommy, Michelle and Nikki), Ricky of Des Moines, (Nick and Carlye), Mario of Des Moines, (Chad and Annie), Barbara and Laurencio Berenguel of Des Moines, (Monica, Anthony, Mandy, and Julia), and David and Diana of Des Moines, (DeEnda and David Jr.); along with 28 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Hermalinda; wife, Margaret Rose Lopez on December 21, 1993; brothers Rogelio and Frederico in 1996; and his son, Larry Lopez on March 21, 2012.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, December 7, 2012, with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m., at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, December 8, 2012, at Our Lady of the Americas, (Visitation Catholic Church), 1271 E. 9th Street, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery.
