Service Details

Marguerite Bates, 82, battled cancer for a year at home and has died Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at Bright Kavanagh House. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, December 3, 2012 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time on Monday. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday, at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.

Marguerite was born August 18, 1930 in Queen City, Missouri to Boyd & Lula (Jackson) Deierling but had lived in Des Moines since 1949. She married David V. Bates and after 61 years of marriage he preceded her in death on January 12, 2012.

Marguerite was a homemaker who loved to do needlework and cook for her family and friends. She was always willing to help other people. Most important to her was her deep love for her family. She was especially proud of her grandson, Erik Bates who attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Marguerite is survived by her son, Larry and his wife Lynda of Des Moines; a brother, Lloyd Deierling of Moberly, Missouri; a granddaughter, Kayla Bates of Des Moines and a grandson, Erik and his wife Khalia of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
