Service Details

Van Delano Mitchell, 61, died Sunday, June 17, 2007 at Diamond Head Lake in Dexter. Visitation with the family present will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Wednesday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th St., with a funeral service held at 7:00 PM. Burial will be at Elm Grove Cemetery on Thursday at 2:00 PM.
Van was born March 28, 1946 in Chariton, Iowa to Nile and Emma (Swinscoe) Nussbaum. Van graduated from S.E. Warren High School in 1964 and served in the Army Reserve Unit 830th Station Hospital at Fort Des Moines. Van was employed by General Mills since 1967. Van met Donna Siebert in 1965 and they were married on April 10, 1966 in Princeton, Mo. With this union they had 4 children. Van enjoyed spending time outdoors and was an avid fisherman. His hobbies included raising orchids, scuba diving and building model rockets, airplanes and cars. He was an avid fan of Star Trek and science-fiction and horror films. He will be especially missed by his beloved cat, Mokey.
Van was preceded in death by his daughter Gale, his father Nile, his grandparents, Parner and Nona Viola Mitchell, who raised him. Survivors include his wife Donna (Siebert), a son, Eric (Janette) a daughter, Danielle (Richard) and a second son, Donavan (Ruth) and grandchildren, Lilly, Lincoln, Winter, Nile, Alexander and Ethan and a step-granddaughter Shayla, his mother Emma and a stepfather Orville Nussbaum, his sisters Regina and Joan. He also leaves brothers-in laws and nieces and nephews.
