Merle N. Lapour, 88, died Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at Valley View Village.

Merle was born October 13, 1924, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Minnie A. (Gosse) and Philo I. Rogers. She graduated from Albion High School in Albion, Iowa, in 1943, and had been a Des Moines resident since 1949. Merle was employed as a computer operator at Job Service Iowa (Iowa Workforce Development) for 37 years until her retirement in 1988. She also worked part time at Veterans Memorial Auditorium and the Iowa State Fair since 1990.

Merle was a member of the New Testament Baptist Church. She was also a member of American Business Women’s Association since 1971, and an active member in AARP Chapter 153. Merle was a member of the Grandview Little League Auxiliary for 15 years, and enjoyed bowling in the Fairlanes Monday Night Ladies League for 20 years.

Merle is survived by her daughter, Maralee (Doug) Kruse of Grinnell, Iowa; sons, Mike Lapour of Des Moines, Cary Lapour of Des Moines, and Craig (Laura) Lapour of Minburn; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, and in 1971 by her husband of 25 years, Melvin Lapour.

There will be a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, November 9, 2012, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 10, also at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Valley View Village or Hospice of Central Iowa in Merle’s name, in appreciation for the compassion and care she received.
