George W. Brown, Jr., 94, passed away on Friday, October 19, 2012 at Fleur Heights Care Center.
George was born on January 24, 1918 in Des Moines to Norma Rose (Willis) and George W. Brown, Sr. He was a Des Moines resident his entire life. He was an alumnus of East High School, Class of 1936 and enjoyed attending their annual reunions. He was employed as a checker on the loading dock for Iowa Packing Company from 1936 to 1967. He also served as a Union Steward. George then worked as a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service from 1967 until his retirement in 1980. George loved playing with his dog, Stubby, and enjoyed relaxing with a good cigar on the porch.
George is survived by his daughter, Antoinette Harris (William); grandchildren, Norman L. Brown, Jr., Michael L. Brown, Taunisha McShan (Dan), Nycholle Davis (Cory), Alonti Brooks (James), Shaunda Gardner (Marquis), TaVonne Botts, and TaLencia Stubbs; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Lee; daughter, Sharon Potts; son, Norman L. Brown, Sr., daughter, Gwendolyn Brewer-Stubbs; and sister, Gussie LaMar.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, October 26, 2012 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines with a visitation period beginning at 12 noon. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

I knew Mr. Brown my entire childhood, I lived on Capitol Ave just east of him.
It was very common to come outside in the morning and smell his cigar lofting down our way. He would have me come up to catch snakes out of his yard and sometimes we would just have a chat. He was a good friend, honest and dedicated to his family. He is missed!!

I never thought I would be saying goodbye to my Grandpa. I was sure he would be 100 when he left us. All in All he always told me he lived a good life and how much he loved us and spoke to me like it was his last time. It made it hard when he would do that and I would always hang up the phone crying because I couldn't ever think about him leaving us. Jazz my daughter and I are headed out to Iowa to say farewell to my Grandpa one last time. Jazz teared up and said Mom I really wanted to meet him and I'm sad he's gone. :( I told her he loved her and will be with her in spirit always.

I grew up knowing Mr. Brown because he was the father of my best friend, Toni. He was a kind and patient man, a good provider and a true gentleman. It was a honor to have known him. My prayers go out to Toni and family. He was a good man who led a good life.
