John Howard Hunter, 88, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, October 16, 2012. He was born February 5, 1924, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Edward and Anna Hunter.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He retired in 1986 after 32 years as an Art Teacher at Ankeny High School. John was a longtime member of Capitol City Baptist Church in Des Moines. He enjoyed golfing, and will be remembered as a faithful and loving father who always put the needs of his family above himself.
John is survived by his children, Gregory (Ingrid Nanne) Hunter, Julie (Mark) Brennan, Susan Hunter, and Karen (Kirby) White; ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; brother, Paull (Reba) Hunter; and his sister, Ruth Hammer. He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Lois.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 20, 2012, at Capitol City Baptist Church, 5990 NE 14th Street, with burial at Avon Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the church.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sunny View for the care and compassion John received during his time there.

You all are in my thoughts and prayers. You have my deepest sympathies. Your Mom and Dad are smiling down on you from Heaven. You can gladly celebrate your Dad's life, the happy memories with him, and the legacy of faith in Christ he has demonstrated throughout his life. Christ will be your portion, strength, comforter, grace sufficient, and peace that surpasses all understanding in the coming days. What a glorious reunion it has been these past few days for your parents and other friends who have gone before us to be at home with Jesus! I really think "I Can Only Imagine" by MercyMe talks about the unspeakable joy your Dad has experienced finally seeing Jesus face to face. God bless you all!

Mr. Hunter was one of my favorite teachers. I especially loved his dry sense of humor. :-) The McKenna Family has a soft spot in our hearts for your Dad. He was so talented and such a kind man. God bless him and all of you as you deal with your great loss. You are in my prayers.

I send my sympathy to John's family on the passing of their father. I was an elementary art teacher in Ankeny during the time that your father taught with George Parkinson at Ankeny High School. John touched many young people as a teacher in the fine arts program in this community. He lived a good life through the support of his own children.

I always thought John had a quiet, gentle spirit.... a servant's heart, deeply devoted to God and to his family. He became both father and mother, dedicating his life to raising four wonderful people. He welcomed me with his whole heart, yet in his own quiet way. Julie, Susan, and Karen...you were my three other sisters...I think of you and miss you all.
Greg, my prayers will be with you and your whole family as you grieve the loss of this wonderful man who gave you all so much...and who was simply known as 'Dad'.

Mr. Hunter was a great man and we will miss him. He welcomed all into his home and treated everyone with kindness and respect. We will keep the Hunter family in our thoughts and prayers.

I remember how your dad was such a good father and how much he loved you all. He was an inspiration in his dedication to your family and his faithfulness to the Lord.

I remember John and your family from a few years ago while both of our families were living on Rose Hedge Drive in Des Moines. John always had a kind smile and a pleasant word. My deepest sympathy goes out to your family during this time of grief of the loss of your loved one.

My thoughts and heart felt prayers are with all of you. I'm sorry that I will not be able to attend the celebration of a well and faithfully lived life. I remember your dad as such a gentle, quiet man. What a wonderful long life he had and now he is at long last reunited with your wonderful mother!
