Martha Merritt

Martha Berneta Merritt, 92, went to be with her Lord on June 14, 2007. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at First Federated Church, 4801 Franklin Avenue. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 19, 2007 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Burial will be at Southlawn Cemetery in Seymour, Iowa at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Berneta was born December 5, 1914 in Luray, Missouri. She lived in Seymour and married Jack Merritt on April 4, 1942. They were stationed in Amarillo, TX during WWII and lived in Grand River, Eldon, and Atlantic, Iowa before moving to West Des Moines in 1958. She was a homemaker, minister’s wife, and also taught school for thirty years. She loved the Lord and church was an important part of her life.
Berneta is survived by her husband Jack; her children, Patricia (Larry) Harker of Des Moines, and Dennis (Patty) Merritt of Lake Elsinore, CA; two grandsons, Todd (Wendy) Harker of Colorado, and Thad (Kerstin) Harker of Walford, IA; six great grandchildren; her sister, Freda (Ken) Clayton of Spirit Lake, IA; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. William and Ruby Cleeton, two brothers Victor and Russell, and her sister Bernice.
