Paul William Senter
October 09, 2012
Paul William Senter, 90, son of William H. and Alma G. (Lindell) Senter passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Kavanagh House on 56th Street.
Paul was born on a farm four miles northeast of Perry in Boone County IA. The Senter family moved to a farm five miles northwest of Ogden Iowa in 1925. Seven years later the family moved to the farm that William (Paul’s father) was raised on. It was located five miles southeast of Rippey, also in Boone County.
Paul received his primary education in rural farm schools. He later attended Rippey High School (class of 1940) and AIB in Des Moines. He also completed accounting courses via correspondence.
Paul served for over 3 years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during the second World War. He was stationed in New Guinea, the Philippines and various south pacific islands. After the war years, he remained active in the American Legion and the Polk County VFW.
Paul was employed as an accountant for Swift and Company in Perry Iowa from 1941 to 1956. He also had stints at Ford Implement Co in Des Moines and General Motors (Chevrolet division) in Van Nuys California. He finished his career as the controller for EMCO Industries in Des Moines, retiring in 1987.
He was a member of the Fort Des Moines United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Elks, Moose, and Masonic Lodges. Professional associations included the Institute of Management Accountants.
Paul’s hobbies included real estate, reading, traveling, golf and spectator sports.
On June 16, 1946 Paul W. Senter was united in marriage with Avis L. Hoff. They lived in Perry for 10 years before moving to Des Moines. Shortly after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, Avis lost her brief battle with cancer on March 21, 1997.
After a difficult year for the surviving Senters, Paul married his former Rippey High School classmate Verda L. Holmes Knosby in Perry.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, aunts, and uncles. His survivors include his wife Verda; sons Victor (Rhonda) of Centerville, IA and Troy of Jersey City, NJ; three grandsons: twins Daniel and David followed by Michael. Also surviving are Verda’s family of ten children plus numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, October 12, 2012 at Ft. Des Moines United Methodist Church, 6205 SW 9th Street with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, IA.
