Service Details

Evelyn Coleman, passed away on Monday, October 8, 2012, at the age of 83. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, October 13, 2012, at Calvary Lutheran Church for the Deaf, 3909 East 42nd Street, Des Moines, with burial following at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, October 12, 2012, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.

Evelyn Mary Coleman was born March 25, 1929, in Anthon, Iowa, to Maurice and Cecile (Martin) Sullivan. She attended the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, where she was a star basketball player. In 1957, she was united in marriage to Loren D. Coleman, and together they raised five children. As a young woman, she worked as a seamstress and then a homemaker upon her marriage. She enjoyed spending time with friends at the deaf club and especially enjoyed big family get-togethers.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband; parents; siblings, John Sullivan, Walter Sullivan, Margaret Schultz, Leo Sullivan, Verla Richardson; and Karen Gerdes; and grandson, Derek Hutchins.

Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Marilyn (Tom) Hutchins and Camilla (Jim) Smith; sons, Derwin (Ruth Collins) Coleman, Barney Coleman, and Maurice (James Riepe) Coleman; grandchildren, Corey Hutchins, David Hutchins, Michelle (Michael) Gossen, and Travis Gable; five great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Patty Pauley, Shirley Uber, and Arlene Sullivan.

Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church for the Deaf in loving memory of Evelyn.
