Service Details

Steven Joseph Osborn, 66, passed away Monday, October 1, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center.

Steve was born September 19, 1946, in Des Moines. He graduated from East High School in 1965. Steve was a Specialist E-5 in the U.S. Army, 9th Infantry Division, and was a Medic during the Vietnam War. He earned a Combat Medal and was a Purple Heart recipient. Steve was a maintenance worker for the Des Moines Public Schools. His past summers were spent mostly on his houseboat on Lake Rathbun where he had some of the best times of his life with family and friends.

He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles, and hanging out in his garage with his buddies. Steve loved his dogs and even had a sidecar installed on his motorcycle for his dog Gizmo. He also enjoyed remodeling his old cars; ’55 Chevy, ’38 Oldsmobile, ’40 Ford, ’34 Chevy Sedan, ’37 Chevy Pickup, El Camino, Jaguar and a Trike, which he took to car shows. His garages, were not normal garages, they were equipped with music, sinks, refrigerators, recliners, TVs & VCRs. He had raced his stockcar #8 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. #8 is still the favorite number of his kids and grandkids. His backyard was a true junk pickers dream! Anything and everything mechanical, car parts and machinery, could be found – he had a minimum of five of EVERYTHING.

He will be remembered as always being the first to help someone in need. Whether it was plowing snow, a meal, or a few dollars, Steve was there to lend a hand. He was deeply loved and will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Steve is survived by his fiancé, Jeannie Eden; daughters, Joan Osborn and Julie Osborn; mother, Helen Osborn; grandchildren, Allison and Aaron Cronk; brothers, Jim (Polly Ann) and Scott (Pam) Osborn; and numerous nephews, nieces, other extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Hugh Osborn, and his brother, Jeff Osborn.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, October 5, 2012, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. A private inurnment will be held at a later date. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
