Vera Mae Jones

Vera Mae Jones, 89, passed away Saturday, September 29, 2012, at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown.

Vera was born February 24, 1923, in Buxton, Iowa, to Herfert and Margaret Thomas. She retired from the State of Iowa after many years of service. Vera was a life-long member of Bethel AME Church, and a member of Delta Sigma Theta.

Vera is survived by her daughter, Margaret (Dave) Holt; sons, Nate (Joanna) Jones, Thomas Jones Jr., Steven (Deanna) Jones, Gregory (Michelle) Jones, Mark (Fana) Jones and Darwin (Alisa) Jones; grandchildren, Alisa Louise Jones, Laura Waddell, Nathaniel Jones Jr., Angela Jones, Andrea Roundtree, Zackery Thomas Jones, Justin Jones, Jaye Jones, Stefanie Jones, Maya Jones, Brendan Jones, Darwin Angelo Jones Jr., Devon Jones, Trice Jones and Zemirah Jones; great-grandchildren, Vincent Ramon Jackson, Taylor Jones, Ebony Emon Jones, Jeramiah Waddell, Anna Waddell, Elizabeth Mayfield, Ariana Ferguson, Olivia Ferguson, Alea Anderson, Brooklyn Anderson, Joshua Howard, Adrianna Roundtree, Kayla Roundtree, Isaiah Roundtree, Noah Roundtree, Anthony Lewis, Reanna Lewis, Steven D. Lewis, Angel Ozara Lewis and Ezekial Bass; and great-great-grandsons, Jeramiah Waddell Jr. and Jaxson Waddell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jones Sr.; son, Vincent Jones; grandson, Steven T. Jones; and her brothers, Neal, Willard and Muriel Thomas.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, October 5, 2012, at Bethel AME Church, 1528 E. University, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.
