After a brave seven year battle with breast cancer, Rita Joan Wood passed away peacefully on August 25, 2012, at Kavanaugh House in Des Moines, Iowa.
Rita was born July 12, 1962, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Richard Earl Wood, Sr., and Geraldine L. May. She was raised in Des Moines and previously worked at Iowa Methodist Hospital and Wellmark Blue Cross.
She is survived by her daughter, Geri Sundell; her long time companion, Ron Sundell; sisters, Vicki Beard and Jamie Beard; brothers, Al Hall, Richard Wood, Terry Wood, and Jim Beard; and her two dear friends, Melissa Spaur and Karen Kelleher. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 30, 2012, at Hamilton's Funeral, 605 Lyon, Des Moines. A visitation will occur Wednesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

Such a tremendous emptiness to lose a sister. I remember Rita as a 10 year old wild child, full of giggles and so much energy, literally running circles around us. Just the other day I told the story of young Rita's down-to-earth way of buttering an ear of corn with her hands, much more efficient than any other method. Just one example of her spontaneity.
Through the years I have often thought about you and Rita. She will remain that joyful child to me.
