Richard L. “Rich” Webb of Altoona passed away August 13, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center after a short but courageous battle with esophageal cancer. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 17, 2012, at 1 p.m., with visitation also one hour prior to the service.

Rich was born September 4, 1952, in Des Moines, the son of Larry Webb and Ida (Speer) Webb. Rich was an avid hunter and outdoorsman who particularly enjoyed fishing, camping and deer hunting.

Rich served his country for three years in the Air Force, and joined the National Guard in 1986 to take advantage of the GI Bill and pursue his dream of being an engineer. Rich was a member of the Minnesota National Guard, where he was a CW2 Intelligence Officer. He completed 31 years of active service to his country. Rich was starting his own company RLW Engineering at the time of his death.

Rich also enjoyed the time that he and Judi spent riding their GoldWing motorcycle and the two vacations that they took on the bike to Minnesota and South Dakota. They were planning the third vacation when he was diagnosed with cancer.

Rich was active in the Masonic Lodge, and was a member of Capitol Lodge 110. He was to have been master of the lodge next year. He was also a member of Scottish Rite.

Rich is survived by his wife of 28 years, Judi whom he married on June 2, 1984, in Bettendorf, Iowa. He is also survived by his daughters, Cheri Webb (Mark Mentzer) of Altoona, Ruth Webb Robison (Tony) of West Des Moines, and Elizabeth Webb Gochnauer (Chase) of Pleasant Hill. He is also survived by step-sons, Scott Jansen of Des Moines, Doug (Heather) Jansen of Waukee, and Todd Jansen (Sherry) of Ankeny.

He had nine grandchildren, Kylie and Ellie Mentzer, Jasmyne, Chayse, and Hudson Robison, Carson Gochnauer, and Alexis, Sydney, and Erica Jansen. Additional survivors include his mother, Ida (John) Morris of West Des Moines, brother, Kenny, sister, Nancy, and many nieces and nephews.

Rich was preceded in death by his father, Larry Webb, son, Andrew; and several aunts and uncles.

In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest donations to a favorite charity in Rich’s name. Rich will be buried at Masonic Cemetery following Masonic and Military Honors.
