Retired Msg. E-8 Robert H. Sargent Jr., 66, passed away on Tuesday July 31, 2012. He was born on May 28, 1946, in Evansville, Indiana, the son of the late Robert H. and Mary E. Sargent. He was the oldest of 5 siblings.

Robert H. Sargent, Jr., graduated from Central High School in 1964. After graduation he enlisted into the United States Army. Robert completed basic training at Ft. Leonard of St. Louis, Missouri, and was assigned to Ft. Lewis in Tacoma, Washington. At this time he married his long-time love Charlotte M. Quinn on August 15, 1966, and they had two daughters, Blanche “Toi” and Tracie T. Sargent. They were married for 38 years. He also completed tours in St. Louis, Missouri; Chicago, Illinois; and Des Moines, Iowa. Robert was a member of the United States Army for 23 years, and retired as a Master Sargent. After retirement from the United States Army he became an employee of the U.S. Postal Service, located at 2nd and University in Des Moines, Iowa, from 1987 until retirement in 2010.

Robert was a wonderful husband, provider and dedicated family man. His family meant the world to him and he would do anything to help out. Robert enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and working. Robert was not known to miss days of work. He was totally dedicated to providing for his family and to being a mentor and friend to many. Robert was very proud of his wife Charlotte M. Sargent for helping in the establishment of the Alliance of Black Telecommunication Professionals. At the time of his wife’s death, the Char Sargent Scholarship fund was established. He was a long-term major donor to the scholarship fund.

His memory will be cherished by his daughters, Blanche “Toi” Sargent, and Tracie Sargent; granddaughter, Chanté; sisters, Linda (Rob) Mc Dole, and Patricia Sargent of St. Louis, Missouri; brother, Anthony Sargent of Evansville, Indiana; special friend, Sally Myers of Atlantic Iowa; and a host of many, many, many friends.

Services will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 6, 2012, from 4 to 7 pm, and the funeral service on Tuesday, August 7 at 10 am.
