Zela Ilene Hon, the daughter of Rufus and Mary Ann Carnagey, was born September 19, 1918, and passed away Saturday, July 28, 2012, at The Rehabilitation Center of Des Moines.

She grew up living in and around the Eagleville, Missouri, area. Zela married Ernest Rex Hon on June 22, 1935, in Albany, Missouri. To this union four children were born – Phyllis Elaine Butters of Des Moines, Iowa, Edith Ilene Sweeney of Cumming, Iowa, Nancy Ann Arthur of Des Moines, Iowa, and Jack Neal Hon of West Des Moines, Iowa.

In the year 1942 they moved from Missouri to West Des Moines, where she lived her remaining years. Three of the children were born in Iowa. Zela was a born-again Christian who loved and served her Lord faithfully. The last several years she attended the Walnut Creek Community Church, worshipping and rejoicing with her beloved church family. Zela loved her family, and it was her greatest joy to have them gather at her home. She also enjoyed making crafts.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rex; brothers, Wiliam and Howard Carnagey; sister, Lucille Sumpter; step-brother, LeRoy Smith; sons-in-law, John Cleghorn and Larry Butters; and her half-sister, Wanda Kinder.

Zela leaves to mourn her passing her four children; two sons-in-law; a daughter-in-law; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and her brother, Marvin Carnagey.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 2, 2012, at Walnut Creek Community Church, 900 64th Street, followed by burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.
