James Van Weelden, 69, passed away July 18, 2012. Visitation will be July 23, at 5 p.m., Funeral Tuesday, July 24, at 10:30 a.m., both to be held at Meredith Drive Reformed Church 5128 Meredith Drive, Des Moines.

James was born May 6, 1943, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the youngest of two children to Adrianus and Hendrika Van Weelden. He was raised in the Lynnville/Sully area where he met his childhood sweetheart Sheryl Brush while in 8th grade. They later married on June 1, 1964. James completed an accounting/business degree from AIB. In 2007, James retired after 20 years in his last position with ColorFX.

James was master of many skills. He was a carpenter and craftsman who also possessed the handyman's magic for fixing anything. His gift as math tutor was well known by family and friends.

James found joy in sharing his ministry through his pure tenor voice for more than 54 years, singing in the Good News Five and Saved by Grace Quartets. He was a member of Meredith Drive Reformed Church, where he served in numerous support roles throughout the decades. In recent years James worked as treasurer of the Board of Directors of Joshua Christian Academy.

James will be remembered for his gentle presence as a loving spouse to beloved wife Sheryl, and father of many children. He made a point of finding joy in anything he set his mind to doing, and reflecting his deep faith by living it as an example.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Sheryl; children, Greg Bowlin, Sherry Borzo (David), Eric Van Weelden (Carrie), Joel Van Weelden (Angie), and Paul Van Weelden (Erica); mother, Hendrika Rozendaal; sibling, Linda Schnell (Dick); stepsiblings, June Rozendaal, Marge Van Dusseldorp, Junella Lanser (Pete), Maurice Rozendaal (Linda), Harv Rozendaal (Mary), and Roger Rozendaal (Vicki).

He is preceded in death by his father, Adrianus Van Weelden, his stepfather, Walter Rozendaal, his stepbrother, Junior Rozendaal, and step-brother-in-law, Wilbur Van Dusseldorp
