Joseph Anthony Martinez, 69, passed away peacefully with his loving wife at his side, Thursday, July 12, 2012, at Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
Joe was born May 17, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Joseph and Antonia (Pavon) Martinez. He was a cook throughout most of his life and truly enjoyed working and spending time with people, and had a great love of music. Joe was proud to be a facilitator at Powell for several years. Above all else, Joe cherished the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Joe is survived by his wife, Sheryl Martinez; sons, Anthony (Lori) Martinez and Chris (Angie) Martinez; daughters, Angie (Nick) Petefish and Jennifer (Ryan) Agnew; beloved grandchildren, Jared, Kamryn, Alec, and Aaron; sisters, Jennie Tingle, Lydia (Joe) Schladwieler, Mary (Jaime) Reyes, and Dolly (Lloyd) Butcher; numerous nieces and nephews; other loving relatives; and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Louie Martinez, sister, Josephine Cabello, and his parents.
Cremation has occurred, and private inurnment will take place at a later date at Berwick Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Bright Kavanagh House in loving memory of Joe.

"Marty" was our brother-in-law. We knew him as Marty, not Joe or Jose. No matter what you called him, he was a very good person. He left a large "footprint" in his time here. He had some very difficult years, but overcame them to counsel people who were going through their dark times. He has left a legacy to his children to leave their "footprint" in helping others. He is our "hero". by how he lived his life. He was a loving husband, father and friend. Marty, heat up the grill and have a "rack of ribs" waiting for us when we next meet! We love you, Norm and Joyce
