John A. Rice

John Austin Rice passed away, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at Mercy Hospice House. John was born On August 6, 1954, to Dorothy and Jack Rice in Dayton, Ohio.

John served his country proudly in the U.S. Air Force at the end of the Vietnam War. He retired after 38 years of dedicated nursing service, in September of 2011, from Broadlawns Medical Center, where he worked as a psychiatric nurse practitioner.

John enjoyed camping, fishing, nature and all to do with the outdoors. He loved helping with the Boy Scouts and took great pride in his church. Most of all he loved being a husband, father and grandfather.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 30 years, Jane; his son, Jesse (Stacy) Rice; his daughter, Andrea (Chris Jacobsen) Rice; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Lynn Rice and Zade Jacobsen, his mother, Dorothy (Marvin) Hoffman; his father, Jack Rice; his sisters, Teresa and Jane McKinney; brother, Richard Rice; and many other loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his step-mother, Kathryn Rice, and two infant brothers, Michael and Jack, Jr.

Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2012, at Bloomfield United Methodist Church, 5930 Indianola Avenue. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 16, at the church. Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday. at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Bloomfield UMC in honor of John.
