Kent Hines
July 04, 2012
Kent Hines passed away July 4, 2012, in Phoenix, AZ, with family by his side. Kent was born in Ames, IA, to Jerry Hines and Frances (Aylward) Hines. He graduated from Nevada HS in 1958, served 4 years in the USAF in the Philippine Islands and Germany, and played football for Hahn AFB. Kent met Kay Larsen in 1965 in Nevada, IA. They were married in 1967, and moved to Cedar Falls, IA, where he graduated from UNI, majoring in Business. Children Lana and Eric were born in Cedar Falls, IA, where Kent started working for Northwestern Bell in 1970 as a Yellow Pages Sales Rep. While in Cedar Falls, he accompanied Kay on many trips with CFHS Spanish students to Spain and Mexico. He was transferred to the Des Moines Yellow Pages office in 1982, and the family moved to Johnston, IA. Kent retired in 2002 from Yellow Pages Sales, and again in 2004 from Yellow Pages in a different capacity.
Kent was a husband, father, friend, pilot, veteran, poker player, joke teller, golfer, fisherman, boater, ISU tailgater, sports enthusiast, traveler, camper, and the host with the most. He belonged to Woodward Golf club for many years, and was proud that he and his partner had won the league championship. He was fun and exciting to be around, and always had a great smile. He loved his family, friends, dogs, and his toys. He also treasured being able to attend the grandkids’ activities, and playing with his dogs, Cracker and Sandy. Kent enjoyed spending this past winter in their home in Phoenix, AZ. He liked airplanes and piloting them so much, that it seems appropriate that he will be flown one last time home to Iowa from Phoenix.
Kent is survived by his wife, Kay of Johnston, IA; his daughter, Lana (Trey) Strong and his grandchildren Jerra, Lauren, and Logan Strong of Las Vegas, NV; his grandson, Nick Hines of Omaha, NE; sisters, Annette Forbes of Ames, IA, and Mary (Jan) Sherwood of Galveston, TX; brothers, Neal of Ames, IA and Mark of Des Moines, IA; brothers-in-law, Ted Larsen of Las Vegas, NV, and Wayne Larsen of Nevada, IA; and step-mother, Ruth Hines. Kent is also survived by his nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for contributions to “On With Life,” and to dementia research.
Visitation will be held at St. Pius X in Urbandale, IA on Saturday, July 14, 2012, at 9:30 a.m., followed by mass at 11:30 a.m. Arrangements are being handled by Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

Kent was a wonderful person. He was one of the best account executives I had with all the Heartland Inns accounts. My sympathies to Kay and his family.

Hiney was one of the best! We all had to be a little crazy all those years in premise sales but Kent was the guy everyone wanted to have on their team because of his positive attitude. A sincere, hard working, family man, he was always fun to be around. Kay, I will be thinking of and praying for you and your family.

Kent was a heck of a yp sales rep. I recall walking by the conference room, seeing Hiney with his paperwork and ad layouts spread out on the tables. We all felt the pain of the DM book close but he always managed to lighten the load with his quick wit and funny stories. I know he's smiling and having a great time with Eric! May they both rest in peace. God Bless!

Known Hiney since 1969.....thats when he sold me a new 1969 Pont. Grand Prix. Later I introduced him to be interviewed for the Y.P.'s. So lucky to have shared a portion of my life with him and his family. Over 40 years of calling him a real friend!!. May his soul (with Eric's) rest in peace.

Hiney was the road warrier that taught me the ropes at Dex! We were staying at the Heatland Inn, and the first time we were both up there (the one on 63rd), he told me the story about his family and how the hotel would accomodate them when Nick was staying just up the road. Kent loved his family and he loved working with the sales team at Dex. He always had a yellow page story and a good joke.
God Bless the Hines family. My deepest sympathies.

Kent and I started the same year at Northwestern Bell Telephone, and we were considered newbies. It was so much fun getting to know Kent and his sense of humor, always there for a good laugh or two. I will always remember the good times during the mid 70s when the crew clerks, as I was called traveled on the road with the crews. Kent was a family man at heart and cared deeply for this wife and children. Please find comfort that his family will have the support of all his friends during this time.

"Marsh", that is what Kent always called me. He was one of the nicest men I have ever known. I enjoyed working and having a great time with him. He had so many yellow page road stories to tell. He made me smile, giggle and laugh deep belly laughs. I know he, Eric and Tom are together, watching over all of us they knew, loved and cared about. Miss you Kent...

Hiney was a co-worker who taught me the ropes. But more importantly he was a friend who taught me what it was to be a great father and a giving person. If I needed the shirt off his back, he'd let me have it. I have so many great memories, but so much sadness. But what I know for sure is he and Eric have hooked up and he is happy! He was "The Wind" ! I'm so fortunate to have had him in my life.

Working with Hiney was so great. We always looked forward to Fridays when the premise people got back in to town. When we saw Hiney the jokes would start flying! He was a great man and will always be fondly remembered by all of us at work.
