Douglas Gibb, 72, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2012, at Kavanagh House on 56th.
Douglas was born on June 5, 1940, in Makaweli, Kauai, to Gwendolyn and Douglas Gibb. He was the Chief of Police for the Honolulu Police Department, and head of security for First Hawaiian Bank before moving to Des Moines. Most recently, he enjoyed his part time job doing what he truly loved, baking for Campbell’s Nutrition.
He is survived by his wife, Melanie; daughter, Diane (Rod) Lahodny of Des Moines; son, Glenn (Faith) Gibb of Honolulu, Hawaii; grandchildren, Emma, Lake, and Stormont; brother, Charles E. (Barbara) Gibb of Honolulu; and sister, Christina (Jay) Moore of Napili, Maui.
A memorial visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 5, 2012, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa, Kavanagh House on 56th, 900 56th Street, Des Moines, Iowa, 50312.

I just received the note & obituary from Melanie informing me of Doug's passing. I write this with tears streaming down my face.
I met Detective Gibb during one of the darkest days of my life, and over the following 38yrs. I have never forgotten him, or his kindness. I considered Doug my friend.
I am heart broken and send my deepest most respectful condolences to his beLoved bride, children, grandchildren, siblings & friends.
My undying heartfelt gratitude to this very good man.

My oldest and closest friend has passed on. We wish to express our sincere condolences to Melani and family. It's especially heartbreaking to me to learn of Doug's passing.
He was the first friend I made when I attendied Punahou in 1955. Three years later, he saved my life when he ran to my rescue on a winter day in the rough surf at Makapuu Beach.. We were very close even though the years took us on different paths to different locations. He was truly, one of the good guys and i for one, shall miss him terribly,

Chuck & I are going to miss our oldest Brother Doug terribly. We are so proud of all his accomplishments and how he was so highly respected by so many people from all walks of life. He will be sorely missed by both his Des Moines and Hawaii families. Our hearts go out especially to his wife, Melanie, of 49 years.

Dear Melanie and Family:
Please accept our condolences to you and the family at this most sorrowful time. Our memories and recollections of the Hawaiian part of our life is vivid and cherished. The work, the friends and the tribulations made it a unique experience. Made most memorable of course by the people we met along the way. Doug was one of the remarkable ones with lots of class, plenty of "scotty" as we Hamiltons have and a huge heart with Aloha for everybody.
Our thoughts are with you and the Family. As we recall the good times, it is hard to not smile and conjure up a "remember when moment or two", good and bad, from the annals of life and law enforcement in Hawaii. I shall toast my friend tonight as I over look the Mighty Mississippi River here in Port Byron through tears and salute my friend with a simple comment "job well done!"

The last time I took care of Doug he shared a health concern then. I don't do a time track on my guys. but i knew he was about due. then I
read the paper Monday. I was floored. We had a great natural chemistry. He was one of my great guys. I am a greater judge of men than most. After 54 years in business. Blessed to have known HIM. FRIEND/BARBER

Aloha 'oe, my beloved Uncle...I've many many fond memories of growing up w/you and the great "Country vs City" volleyball games we had in Kaaawa..You cooked like no one else and mediated our kid fights...I will miss you dearly, Uncle..I'm in tears, but will always watch over Aunty, Squeeks, Kale and the keiki w/you...I love you, Uncle and hope you're up there boxing Brother Boy's ears and getting love from the family there awaiting you...We'll all see you again, Uncle...Aloha 'oe,Uncle...I love you...
