Service Details

Vernon Martin McClurg passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday, June 6, 2012. Please join family and friends for a visitation on Friday, June 8, from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, and for the funeral service on Saturday, June 9, at 11:00 AM, at the Pleasant Hill Church of Christ, 5091 East University, Pleasant Hill, Iowa. Burial will be immediately following the funeral at the Warren-Powers Cemetery, with full military honors.

Vernon was born in Des Moines on July 31, 1925, the youngest child of Arthur and Charlotte McClurg. He graduated from East High School and proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 18, serving in the South Pacific throughout World War II and participating in the invasions of Peleliu, the Palau Islands, and Okinawa.

Following the war, Vernon returned home to begin a career in sheet metal fabrication and architectural drafting, working on projects in central Iowa and across the country for the next 35 years. Most importantly, while roller skating with friends, he met his beloved wife of 65 years, Marilyn. His life would never be the same.

Vernon and Marilyn lived and raised their three children; Mark (Susie) McClurg, Brian (Laura) McClurg, and Lisa (Martin) Williamson in the central Iowa area. They were further blessed with six grandchildren over the years, Corey and Lindsay McClurg, Emily, Jill, and Aubrey McClurg, and Nathan Williamson. Vernon loved and was proud of every member of his family including his good friend, Lexie.

Later in life, Vernon owned and operated Cascade Car Wash for 20 years, and regularly “solved” many of the world’s pressing issues while drinking coffee with friends at Dahl’s.

At the age of 78, Vernon was baptized into Christ, and was a member of the Pleasant Hill Church of Christ for the rest of his life. His faith, his loving and generous nature and his strength throughout difficult health challenges were an inspiration to his wife and family.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, brother Frank, sisters Jessie Rudy and Luella Fosdick, and a twin sister, Vera. He is survived by all members of his immediate family.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Pleasant Hill Church of Christ, the Foundation Fighting Blindness or the Hospice for Central Iowa.
