Evelyn Maye Thomas, 83, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. She was born June 27, 1928, on the family farm in Exira, Iowa, to Robert and Ethel Nelson. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1946, and married Albert “Tommy” Thomas on her birthday in 1948. Evelyn retired from the Polk County Treasurer’s Department of Motor Vehicles where she worked for 25 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, fishing, gardening, mowing her yard, quilting, cross-stitching, crocheting, taking care of her home, studying genealogy, and making delicious cookies for her family, neighbors, and friends. Evelyn’s hands worked many, many hours peeling apples by hand to make her famous homemade applesauce! Thanks, Mom!
Evelyn is survived by her sons, Randy (Nancy) Thomas of Runnells, IA, and Ray Thomas of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, John (Beth) Thomas of Urbandale, IA, Jamie Jo Thomas of Nashville, TN, Jeff Thomas of Lowell, MA, and Tina Thomas of Omaha, NE; and great-grandchildren, Noah and Abraham Thomas of Urbandale, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tommy; and her grandson, James.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 8, 2012, at New Hope Assembly of God Church, 6800 Townsend, Urbandale, followed by burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, June 7, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.

So sorry to hear about Evelyn passing away. Just wanted to let you know I think about her every time I must go down town to get my license. She always would put Mike and I up in the front of the line when ever she saw us getting plates.She was a wonderful lady.
