Service Details

Russell Eugene Warren, 92, died Monday May 26, 2012 at his home in Florida. He was born February 2, 1920 to John and Estella Warren in Des Moines. His mother died when he was five and he was raised by his Quaker father and his mother’s sister, Myrtle Duncan.

His formative years were influenced by his stern father and the Great Depression. World War II occupied his early adult years. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard on July 30, 1942, and was attached to the U.S. Navy, participating in LST landings at Salerno, Palermo, and Anzio. After the war, he completed his enlistment in St. Louis, Mo., working on diesel engines.

Russell returned to Des Moines, Iowa, and married Corrine Strayer. He worked as a mechanic for the city of Des Moines until 1948, when he joined the Des Moines Police Department, rising to the rank of lieutenant.

After his retirement in 1975, he and Corrine purchased property in Centerville, Iowa, and with his own hands Russell built a house. Corrine resided with him there until her death on June 5, 2003, after 57 years of marriage. In November 2006, he moved to La Belle, Florida to be closer to his oldest son, Thomas. On May 26, 2012 Russell joined Corrine in eternal rest.

He is survived by his three sons, Thomas, Kirby and Jeffrey and their families.

Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2012 at Pine Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to Jerry Rabiner Boys Ranch in Fort Dodge.
