Ferne (Leonard) Klein

Ferne (Leonard) Klein, 85, of Des Moines Iowa passed away on April 25, 2012, at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines, Iowa.

She was born on November 14, 1926, in Lamoni, Iowa, to Ray and Pearle Leonard. She graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1943, and Iowa Lutheran Hospital Nurses Training School in 1947. She and Howard Klein were married in 1947, and they raised two sons. The marriage ended in divorce.

She worked full-time as a nurse at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in the late 1940s and again in the 1950s on a part-time basis while caring for her family. In 1973, she began working for the State of Iowa in the Department of Revenue. She completed her years in the Family Services Division and retired in 1999. She worked in the offices of Mercy Hospital in the evenings and weekends during the 1980s. She was very interested in genealogy and family ancestry.

She is survived by her sons, Alan Klein (Becky) of Belton, Missouri, and John Klein (Carol) of Carroll, Iowa; grandchildren, Cheryl Klein of Brooklyn, NY, Holly Klein of Treynor, IA, Hans Klein-Hewett (Megan) of Omaha, NE, Melissa Jackson (Joe) of Kansas City, MO; and two great-grandsons, Preston Jones of Treynor, IA, and Callum Jackson of Kansas City, MO. Special close friends are Roberta Harris and Gail Lane, both of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Robert Leonard.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Monday, April 30, 2012, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, followed by a 2 p.m. burial at Rose Hill Cemetery in Lamoni. Visitation will be Monday from 9 to 10 a.m., at the funeral home.
