Ruby Thompson, 92, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2012, due to a stroke.

Ruby Nadine Kincebach was born July 25, 1919, at home in Prairie City during an ice cream social, to Rebecca Jane (Pentico) and Elmer Ray Kincebach. She tasted homemade ice cream at only a few hours old and enjoyed ice cream the rest of her life. Ruby graduated from Newton High School and was then employed by the Newton Daily News as society editor. It was there she met a printer, Robert Wells Thompson, who offered to teach her to drive. They were married on November 29, 1940. They lived briefly in Newton and Des Moines before settling in Bob’s hometown of Altoona, where they lived until moving to Courtyard Estates in Bondurant in 2007.

After their three children, Wesley (Alice) of Adel, Janet (Scott) Glass of Altoona, and Ron of Florida were in school, Ruby returned to work part time in the Alterations Department of J.C. Penney. She retired from there as Personnel Director. Ruby enjoyed camping, traveling, Arizona winters, gardening, reading, sewing, quilting and most of all, spending time with her family. She was a 50-year member of Altoona Christian Church, and Altoona Order of the Eastern Star.

In addition to her three children, she is survived by four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2010, and her brothers, Bill and David Kincebach.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, April 29, 2012, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona. Funeral services will be Monday, April 30, 2012, at 10:30 a.m., at Altoona Christian Church, 2890 1st Avenue S, Altoona, followed by burial at the Altoona Cemetery.
