Service Details
Nola Jean Penland passed away on Monday, April 23, 2012 at the Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, with her family by her side. Nola was born on August 30, 1949 in Hartley, Ia. to Elaine and Ralph Bethke.
Nola retired after 41 years of dedicated service from the State of Iowa as a purchasing agent. After her retirement, Nola enjoyed working at Blank Park Zoo, gardening, cooking, spending time with her family and watching her granddaughter, Miranda, play softball.
Nola leaves behind her husband of 41 years, Steve; her son, Tim (Elizabeth Polenz); her daughter, Angie (Bill) Eggers; and grandchildren, Rudy, Jordan, James and Miranda.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Bruce Bethke.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 27, 2012 at Grace Baptist Church, 112 County Line Road in Des Moines.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Blank Park Zoo in remembrance of Nola Penland.

I have had the pleasure to work with and know Nola since I came to Iowa in 1981. I will miss our conversations, even after she retired. She always brought a smile to my face. I'll be sending a contribution to the Blank Park Zoo in her memory. She really enjoyed her retirement time there. I will miss you! I am going to miss laughing with you as we read our Janet Evanovich books at work...when it was slow. You were a great friend to me in my time of need and I will always remember that!!!

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Nola for 25 years in DHS. She was a leader, a great friend and co-worker. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to your family.

We will miss Nola dearly. Miss your laugher, great additude, and huge smile. We worked with her and her hushand at the Blank Park Zoo. Wish we had alot more years to share together. Nola, may you be in peace and keep Heaven laughing with your great sense of humor.
