Norma Jean Thorpe passed from this life to peaceful rest on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Bright Kavanagh House. She was born Norma Jean Morrison on July 6, 1925, in Deep River, Iowa, to George and Ethel Morrison.
On November 4, 1945, she married Lyle V. Thorpe in Brooklyn, Iowa and shortly after they moved to Des Moines. Norma worked many years for Des Moines Public Schools in food service at May Goodrell, Tech High, and Hoyt Middle School. After retiring, she worked part time at Gordman’s and also found time to volunteer at Mercy Hospital.
Norma is survived by sons, Craig (Julie) Thorpe and Tracy (Sandy) Thorpe, both of Des Moines; grandson, Jaime Thorpe; and great-grandchildren, Connor and Logan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Thorpe; son, Terry (at birth); brothers, Melvin and Shorty Morrison; and sisters, Doris Madison and Opal Candler.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery in Brooklyn, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.
Memorial contributions may be directed Disabled Veterans Association, Hospice of Central Iowa or Animal Rescue League.

Tracy and Craig, we were so sorry to read of Norma passing.
What a great gal to have known.
We can always remember the fun times we had on vacations with all of you in Tennessee and playing Tripoli(cards)with your folks. Still miss your Dad and now your Mom, will always think of them often.

My deepest thoughts are with you, Tracy. Your mom was the nicest person my parents ever had as friends. Of all the card playing, camping buddies, I truly loved your mom. I will always have the fun memories of us all camping and vacationing together. They were the best years.

I just learned of Norma's passing today when I saw the obituary in the paper. I am saddened by her passing. I was thinking of visiting her so many times but it seemed like I had no extra time or I had a flu, pink eye, etc...
I worked with Norma couple of times in her home. I was her Physical Therapist through Mercy Home Care. She was a very pleasant person to work with. I looked forward on seeing her. I even bought knitted wash cloths from her.
I am very blessed to have known such a wonderful lady.
