Donald “Donnie” Matkovich passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Donnie was born on October 22, 1936, in Williamson, Ia., to Albert and Olga Matkovich.
Donnie grew up in Melcher, Ia. He retired from Firestone after 35 years of dedicated service. Donnie loved his dogs - Lucy, Dolly I, and Dolly II. He enjoyed gardening, walleye fishing and cooking. He took great pride in his yard and his landscaping.
Those left behind are his wife of 52 years, Carolyn; his sons, Marty and Tony (Leigh Ann); his grandchildren, Andrew and Molly; his sisters, Mary Ann Crowe and Catherine Roth; and his many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jim.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, April 16, 2012, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street. Family will greet friends from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Hope Ministries, P.O. Box 862, Des Moines, IA 50304-0862 in honor of Donnie Matkovich.

Dearest Carolyn, Marty and Tony:
From the moment I met Don, I loved him (and all of you). My deepest sympathies on the loss of one of the kindest and sweetest men I've ever met. He was the most gentle of men, who I know was so devoted to, and filled with love for his family,friends (and his dogs). I'm sorry I could not be there with you, but I am with you in spirit.

Don was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed. I became acquainted with him thru the South Park Neighborhood Association and he was a great help at our neighborhood garden and other neighborhood activities. Your family is in my prayers.

I only knew Donnie for a short time ,but he was easy to like and be with.

To Carolyn Matkovich and Family:
I am sorry I wasn't able to attend the Visitation or Funeral Services for Donnie. I knew Donnie for a long time - 65 years. It was from 1947 when we went to school together, and later at Firestone.
-Always a nice guy to be around, I'll miss him.
