Dr. Mary C. Opel, 59, passed away 3:50 a.m., Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at Taylor House Hospice. She was born November 9, 1952, in Des Moines, the daughter of Gordon and Shirley (Funk) Opel. She was raised in Des Moines with her older sister.
Mary was a graduate of Hoover High School, and earned her degree in veterinary medicine from Iowa State University. She practiced in Anaheim, California. Throughout the years, Mary remained devoted to Hoover and I.S.U.
Mary is survived by her son, Nikolas, sister, Jan Opel, and her father. She was preceded in death by her mother, and nephew, Jacob Opel.
Her family has honored her wish of cremation. Burial of cremated remains will be held in June 2012 at the Masonic Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to Taylor House Hospice.

So sorry to read of Mary's passing in the AVMA journal. She was a much admired classmate and the world was a better place for her presence and contributions.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to the family. I am a classmate of Mary's from vet school and I just learned of her passing tonight at our 35 class reunion. I talked with Mary a few years ago and she told me she wanted to get back to Iowa. I did not know she had returned. I live in Ames and would have been so happy to see her again.
