Barbara A. Chappas, 87, passed away at her home on Tuesday, April 3, 2012.

Barbara was born September 30, 1924, in Des Moines. In 1942, she graduated from East High School and was a proud and devoted alumnus. Barbara proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Barbara loved playing all types of games from board games to dominos. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. Barbara volunteered at Iowa Lutheran in the Surgical Waiting Room for many years, and was a member of Union Park United Methodist Church and Bellizzi Macrae American Legion.

Barbara is survived by her children, Suzanne Chappas of Des Moines, John (Donna) Chappas of Spirit Lake, Deborah Bartlett of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Karla (Joseph) Aiello of Des Moines and Barbara (Gary) Stoltenberg of Olathe, Kansas; son-in-law, Mark Huschka of Kansas City, Missouri; six grandchildren; four great-grandsons; brother, Robert K. Nielsen of California and many other loving family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Albert; daughter, Christine Chappas; parents, Robert and Ann Nielsen; sister, Bonnie Piper; and brother, Jack Nielsen.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or Union Park United Methodist Church in loving memory of Barbara.
